A Marriage Poem
May your love twine around you
May it grow strong and straight
May you find strength
And may the blessings of love
With Patton in Germany
Get the Job Done
To liberate a prisoner
do what must be done
send a tank and crew along
to rescue simply one.
Give them their instructions
command them on their way
don’t forget to gas the tank
to free them from the fray.
The road to hell is bloody
the maw lies gaping wide
the tank crew knew their business
and soon was well inside.
The prisoner they did rescue
escape within their grasp
rolling home they hurried
freedom tried to clasp.
But the tank began to sputter
the engine chugged and died
with hounds of hell in full pursuit
the weary soldiers sighed:
Don’t send us out to do a job
without the tools we need –
gas enough to get us home –
with Patton’s family freed.
This poem honors a dear friend who died today. He was with Patton in Europe and was given the mission of liberating Patton’s son-in-law from a prisoner-of-war camp. The crew knew at the outset they did not have enough gas to get home.

Wolf Hunting Begins
The hunting of wolves begins shortly in the states of Montana, Idaho, and – possibly – Wyoming. Now that we have taught wolves it’s finally OK to approach and be curious about humans, we are going to kill them. Nice work.
Here’s a link to an interesting article by Brendan Borrell of Bloomberg News. It discusses market-based ways to manage the conflict between ranchers and environmentalists, perhaps to the benefit of all, including wolf populations.

The Linden Tree
LINDEN BLOSSOMS
We sit together under the linden
just steps from the back door,
your favorite spot in the yard.
From here you could see inside and out
guarding your domain.
Now a gentle rain falls
and joins with my tears.
Sweet linden blossoms drift
into your soft fur.
Giving comfort as always,
paw on leg and nose in face,
the deepest of sleep approaches,
and this special gift of the universe
will be gone from me.

True Blue
The Gift of Presence
some things I have learned from my dogs
(or am still learning):
to be home for dinner;
to love and accept without measure;
to greet with joy;
to give comfort by being present;
to spit out medicine, but swallow the turkey;
to revel in the healing power of touch.
Surely Blue
Mountain Bluebird
Where sky meets mountain
in tones of blue
shy songbird
cloaked impossibly in cerulean
flits to the yellow green willow
Surely Blue
Strong but soft
rich but subdued
quietly sure
not cobalt
not royal
not baby
but
bluebird
deeply serene cerulean

Honk If You’re a Goose
Honk If You’re A Goose
Mama lays eggs by the lap pool
chlorinated wetland sanctuary
Pop patrols the parking lot
stands with the security guard
hisses at swimmers
flies by and honks a greeting
after goslings hatch.
Canada geese
Hawaii
Brain Waves
Sweet scents
of fecund foliage
weave sinuous patterns
soft-shaded aroma
snakes gracefully
into the ancient brain
Remembrance
Records
Cruelty so methodical
it consults lists
cruelty so arrogant
it keeps records
cruelty so complete
it robs you of yourself
cruelty so widespread
it consumes the known universe
cruelty so tidy
it couldn’t be life
