Inland Dreams

HOMEWARD BOUND

Let me live in the ocean
sea source of life
let me ride waves and currents
in perfect sureness
land limbs and land rhythms
long forgotten
free to fly
in cold clean living water
singing my slow songs
without haste.
• • • •
Surfacing, my eyes will know you,
speak of the deep sea secrets
we cannot share.

Northern Flicker

This wasn’t the poem I was going to post, but a beautiful flicker just banged into my window.  It wasn’t too bad a bang, and he flew off to the apple tree, looking somewhat stunned.  I hope he’s OK and post this to honor this curious, gentle, musical beauty who graces the neighborhood and seems to be wintering over for the first time.

Northern Flicker

Gentle woodpecker
wears a coat of patterned velvet
in cream, brown and black
streaked red like the setting sun
many-voiced visitor
drums like a chain saw
chortles a throaty chuckle
peals a piercing greeting
flying call

cascades

like flowing

water

mystery sound on the wing
surprises and delights

Dangerous Games

Strange Birds

Armed only with a sense of injustice,
orange-breasted hunter-catcher
patrols her property
calling loudly to hunters
to keep away
calling silently to animals
– stay hidden –
This is no children’s game
we play.

Mathematics of the Heart

Root Squared

Do not prepare the heart
for future sorrow
The blow will not be softened
no feelings spared
loss anticipated more than doubles
the root of sorrow squared.

Quirky Imperfect

Quirky Imperfect

Quirky teeth
not perfect
just like me

Cancelled a visit to the dentist to make quirky teeth more perfect.  Couldn’t stand the thought of not being able to bite into an apple. ( I apologize for this Facebook-like post.)

Ode to Edward Abbey (2)

Ode to Edward Abbey (2)

Voice in the wilderness
cries
as flesh of the desert
flows upstream
current contained and controlled
river’s life condemned
incarcerate

The Hunter

THE HUNTER

O’ Hunter

Take heed from the wolf
Cull the herd of the weak and sick
and pass over
the beauty of the strong.

Herd Dog/In the Doghouse

HERD DOG

Herd dog gone bad
salivates
at the smell
of lamb roast.

This poem is for Storm Cloud, our border collie.  Here are some pictures (taken a few years ago) of Stormy and Ben together in the dog house.  One of them looks pleased.
